Watch the video below: Hearing Color with Kandinsky
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian Abstract Expressionist painter who had a neurological condition called Synesthesia (the combination of two senses). This is the ability to "hear" colors and "see" music.
Sketchbook Assignment: Can you SEE music?
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian Abstract Expressionist painter who had a neurological condition called Synesthesia (the combination of two senses). This is the ability to "hear" colors and "see" music.
Sketchbook Assignment: Can you SEE music?
- Select a short piece of non-verbal music (15-30 seconds)
- Listen to that piece of music multiple times to hear all the separate sounds within the piece (how big are the sounds? how long are the sounds? how soft or sharp are the sounds?)
- Select a color (or shape/texture if color is not available) for each sound you hear
- Finally, compose an abstract piece of artwork that REPRESENTS the music. It can be designed to be "read" top to bottom, left to right, front to back, back to front... HOW it is composed is up to you!
- Tips:
- Be careful not to use TOO many colors and if a sound is repeated, use the same color/shape to represent the sound
- Consider the variety of sounds (in music, the layering of sounds is called texture) so your piece has variety of shapes/colors
- Is your piece of music more organic? geometric?
- This is a REALLY fun project. It can be any size you want and you can use any media you have available. I won't be able to hear the music you used, but I am excited to see how the music inspires these abstract pieces of art!
WEEKLY AGENDA May 11-15
Sketchbook assignment is due Monday, May 18
Watch the video below: Winslow Homer- The Fog Warning is a perfect example of early 20th century American Realism. Homer loved painting seascapes and rural scenes, but it was the power of the sea that he tried to replicate with paint.
Sketchbook Assignment: Seascapes
Find an image of a seascape either online or even better- one that you or a family member has taken. Sketch the image lightly in your sketchbook and if you have colored pencils, begin to slowly build the colors and values. Practice mixing the colored pencils on a scrap piece of paper to blend and build NEW colors. White on top of blue on top of red is DIFFERENT than white on top of red on top of blue. The color mixing is limitless, even with a small set of colored pencils. Build the colors so the fibers of the paper disappear. Your color should be solid when you finish. (In class I would tell you that if your hand didn't hurt at the end of each class, you were not using your colored pencils correctly!) Make the colors thick, rich, and creamy- like good macaroni and cheese!
**If you do not have colored pencils, use a pencil and work on your textures, movement, and values.

WEEKLY AGENDA May 4-8
Sketchbook assignment is due Tuesday, May 12
Sketchbook Assignment: Pointillism! (Optical Mixing: when the viewer's eye blends the colors from a distance rather than the artist blending them)
Art MIXING with Science!!!
Materials needed: Markers or paint (watercolor or acrylic) if possible, if not, you can also do this with crayons or colored pencils but it's a little more difficult to make the dots.
If you have nothing but a pencil or pen, you can do it with a pen and create values like you did on your Ribbon Drawings we did at the beginning of the semester.
Also, the smaller your dots are, the more control you have over proportion, color, and value!

If you have nothing but a pencil or pen, you can do it with a pen and create values like you did on your Ribbon Drawings we did at the beginning of the semester.
- Step 1: Watch the 3 videos below on French Post-Impressionist Georges Seurat (3 parts)
- Step 2: Find an image either online or in a magazine (or one you took would be ideal!) that is brightly colored and has clearly defined objects or parts to the picture. (A monochromatic or earth tone picture would be too difficult)
- Step 3 : Lightly draw the image (or zoom in to a good, colorful part) on your whole sketchbook sheet (or on a canvas or piece of cardboard if you have paint!) TIP: If you paint on cardboard, paint it first with a coat of white paint (house paint is great, but try not to use gloss or semi-gloss)
- Step 4: LOOK at your photo- look at each section of color and determine HOW to make that color. Is it green? Use green, but also add yellow dots to lighten it and blue dots to darken it!
- Step 5: Create VALUES by how MANY dots you use- the more dots, the darker or more intense the color is. The fewer dots, the lighter it is. If the area is mostly white, just put a few dots in that area.
- Step 6: If you used marker, erase all your pencil lines.
Also, the smaller your dots are, the more control you have over proportion, color, and value!
- Email me a photo to [email protected] - I can't wait to see more of what makes each one of you UNIQUE!
This last video has a project at the end similar to what you are doing but it kind of cheats :)
You won't be using watercolor under your paint or marker dots- just the dots!

- Step 3 (need a partner and a light source): Using a light source such as a flashlight or lamp without a shade, have your partner draw your profile (just your head and shoulder) USE A WHOLE SHEET OF PAPER!
- Step 4: FILL your profile full of items that represent you! They can be bigger, smaller, color or b/w but be sure to FILL your profile and leave as little empty space between objects as possible.
- Step 5: If you have color, add color as you have time for. Make the color VIBRANT!
- Email me a photo to [email protected] - I can't wait to see more of what makes each one of you UNIQUE!

WEEKLY AGENDA Apr. 20-24
Questions and Sketchbook assignments due Friday, April 24
- Reading Assignment: Instead of reading this week, WATCH THE RENAISSANCE VIDEO below the weekly agenda!
- Complete RENAISSANCE VIDEO questions on the link provided below. Save a copy, PUT ANSWERS IN A COLOR OTHER THAN BLACK, and share it with me
- OPEN BOOK QUIZ: This will cover Native American, African, Mexican, Medieval, Romanesque, and Gothic Art. You are allowed to use the online book and you are also allowed to use your guided notes and questions! See the LONG LINK above.
- Sketchbook Assignment:
- Look up a picture of the original Mona Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci and save a copy to your drive (or use the picture below)
- Select your favorite cartoon character (Disney, Pixar, Video Games, TV, etc.) and draw them in the pose of Mona Lisa. INCLUDE THE BACKGROUND! It can be the original background and clothing or it can be adjusted to fit to your new character.
- The POINT is to make your character LOOK like a recognizable version of the Mona Lisa
- Email me a photo to [email protected] - I can't wait to see what you come up with!
- One more thing- IT MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE! Do not use characters that are vulgar or otherwise inappropriate.
Fun Renaissance video (instead of reading!) Only need to watch to the 8 minute mark, when Mannerism begins (we will skip that part!)

- TAKE A PHOTO WITH YOUR PHONE OR CHROMEBOOK AND EMAIL IT TO ME: [email protected]
- Sketchbook Assignment #2:
- Find a picture of EITHER a Medieval Castle OR a Romanesque Church (try to find a picture that has some perspective/ angles)
- Lightly sketch the structure in your sketchbook (or on a larger paper, if possible! Think outside the box- do you have newspaper you can use? It's okay if it has words on it! Do you have cardboard? Paper bag that you can cut open? Old tissue paper? The options are limitless!
- Next, you will use the CHARCOAL to create the textures and values on your drawing. What does the stone look like? What other textures and values do you see?
- DON'T HAVE CHARCOAL? Well, you have options! First, if you have wood that has been partially burned, believe it or not you can use that! (after all, that is what charcoal is made of!)
- ***PLEASE DO NOT BURN ANYTHING WITHOUT YOUR PARENT'S HELP!***
- Another option- you could use your darkest available pencil, OR even sidewalk chalk! Chalk or pastel is very similar to charcoal. You just have to be creative with showing VALUES- or SHADING with chalk. Maybe your paper bag or cardboard is dark and you are using the chalk to show HIGHLIGHTS instead of shadows? It can be done!
- REMEMBER, I AM HERE TO HELP WITH ANY QUESTIONS! If you have an idea and are not sure- just email me and ask!
- TAKE A PHOTO WITH YOUR PHONE OR CHROMEBOOK AND EMAIL IT TO ME: [email protected]
